Teachers, employees of universities in Sulaimani, Raparin protest against salary delays

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Part of teachers and employees of the universities in Sulaimani and Raparin went on a strike on Sunday in protest of salary delays.

The teachers and employees of the University of Sulaimani gathered outside the old and new campuses of the university to protest against salary delays and injustice in the distribution of payments, Esta Media Network reporter said.

The reporter added that part of the teachers and employees had gone on a strike against the delays of March payment.

“Today is May 8th, but we haven’t paid the salary of March,” a protester told Esta Media Network during the demonstration.

“Why Erbil got paid, but Sulaimani hasn’t,” he asked, referring to public teachers and employees in Erbil.

Another protester criticized the government for distributing salaries in Erbil but postponing it Sulaimani.

“Only those who run this so-called government understand this. In one Region, the same ministry gets paid there but this is my situation here,” she said, referring to employees of the ministry of higher education and scientific research in Erbil who has gotten paid salaries of March.

Teachers and employees of the universities and institutions of five ministries including the ministry of higher education in Sulaimani, Halabja, Raparin and Garmian have yet to receive salaries of the month of March.

Authorities in Sulaimani say the issue of delays in salaries in Sulaimani and Halabja provinces as well as Raparin and Garmian administrations is “political”.
