SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi parliament on Tuesday set March 26 as the date for a delayed vote on the country’s president.
The parliament also released a list of 40 candidates for the post.
Among the frontrunners are Barham Salih, the incumbent and a candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and Rebar Ahmed of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
The Iraqi parliament failed to select a new president last month due to a lack of a quorum and legal issues.
On February 13, the supreme court ruled out a bid by veteran politician Hoshyar Zebari of the KDP, after a complaint filed against him over years-old corruption charges.
Intense negotiations among political groups have failed to form a majority parliamentary coalition to appoint a new prime minister to succeed Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
The largest political bloc led by firebrand Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, had backed Zebari for the presidency.
