SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least 35 women activists have been detained in the Iranian Kurdish areas in a year, according to a human rights organization.
On the International Women’s Day, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights said the women were arrested by the Iranian forces between March 2021 and March 2022.
The Iranian courts handed jail sentences to 12 of the activists, said Hengaw, which monitors human rights abuses in Iranian Kurdistan.
Most of the detainees were accused of “political activities and links to the Kurdish opposition parties”, it added.
There were two students among the detainees, the organization said in a statement. Five others were below 18 years old.
The arrests took place in Sanandaj, Kermanshah, Ilam and Urmia.
