Kurds commemorate 31st anniversary of 1991 uprising

SULAIMANI (ESTA) – The Kurdistan Region officials congratulate the people and encourage unity on the 31st anniversary of the Kurdish uprising that began in Raniya against the Baath regime.

Today 31 years after the uprising, Saddam Hussein’s record of brutality still continue to be felt throughout the Region.

“The Kurdish revolt was an uprising against injustice and oppression,” said Bafel Talabani in a statement on his official Facebook account.

Talabani expressed worries there is a “misuse of power” that could lead to termination of symbolic uprising achievements long sought by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and other political parties.

“Misuse of power, ignoring rightful demands of the beloved people of Kurdistan and lack of public services have worried the people and made them to say (the uprising was not meant to emerge the current situation),” Talabani said.

“Heedless towards the rightful demands of the people will have a consequence that we have never aimed for.”

Commemorating the 31st anniversary of the Kurdish uprising, the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said the celebration should lead to the emergence of further unity and coexistence.

The uprising against the regime of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein first began in the town of Raniya on March 5, 1991. The uprising soon took a wider form and the Kurds in other cities and towns quickly took up arms until the expulsion of the Iraqi army.
