Bafel Jalal Talabani says PUK sees protection of nation’s rights above ‘all posts, privileges’

Bafel Jalal Talabanu meets Finnish Ambassador to Iraq Matti Lassila in Sulaimani, February 27, 2022.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Bafel Jalal Talabani said on Sunday the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) sees the protection of Kurdish nation’s rights above all positions and privileges.

Talabani met with Finnish Ambassador to Iraq Matti Lassila in Sulaimani on Sunday, his office said in a statement.

They discussed the latest political, economic and security developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the statement read.

“When we say the government of service and consensus should be based on real partnership, it is for the sake of further political, economic, security and prosper stability for the country, not on the basis of policy of marginalization and imposition of majority,” Talabani said.

“Such a mentality and steps will complicate the situation in Iraq and the Region, and the obstacles and preventions will increase in front of reform and service,” he added.

Regarding Kurds, Talabani said the PUK is with the unity of Kurdistan to face issues.

“We don’t want to take any steps outside the national front, but when an agreement is made outside the national will and public interest, the PUK will have its own strategy and will seek other solutions, and certainly any step we take will protect the interest of public, and we see the protection of our nation’s rights above all posts and privileges,” he said.

The two sides also discussed the role of the U.S.-led Coalition forces in the fight against terror and their assistance for the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces.
