SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants near Jalawla in Diyala province late on Friday (November 13), a Kurdish commander said.

The militants attacked a joint checkpoint of the Iraqi and Kurdish security forces between Jalawla, known as Gulala in Kurdish, and Kalar on Friday night.

Kurdish commander Nabil Mohammed told Esta Media Network that two Iraqis soldiers were killed and another soldier and a Kurdish policeman were wounded in the attack.

“ISIS militants attacked the joint checkpoint of Iraqi army and Kurdish policemen in Garmian with light weapons,” the commander said.

A security source said two members of Iraqi and Kurdish forces were killed in the attack.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
