SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) handed over 10 prisoners to Iran, the ministry of labor and social affairs said on Tuesday.

Officials from the Kurdistan Region and Iran held a ceremony on the Haj Omran border crossing, as part of a prisoner exchange between the two sides.

They signed a memorandum of understanding between the two countries during the ceremony, the KRG ministry of labor and social affairs said.

Kurdistan Region’s general director of social reform Ahmed Najmadin said the prisoner exchange between the Region and Iran “is based on an agreement between Iraq and Iran” under a law adopted by the Iraqi parliament in 2014.

Prisoner exchanges have previously occurred between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.
