SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi judicial council on Sunday condemned the assassination of a judge in Maysan province on Saturday.

Judge Ahmed Faisal specialized in drug cases was headed home in his car in the city of Amara, the capital of Maysan province, when unknown assailants blocked his route and opened fire.

“We strongly condemn and reject the assassination of judge Ahmed Faisal Saadi,” the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement.

The judicial council also held the security forces and operations command in the province responsible due to “recklessness in carrying out their duties”.

It also called on Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to review duties of military officials responsible for the security of the province.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

AFP cited a forensic source as saying that the judge died of gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

The victim had been shot 15 times with a Kalashnikov, two police sources said, according to AFP.

In September, another anti-drug judge escaped an assassination attempt in the same province.
