SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Turkish defense ministry confirmed on Wednesday that the country’s warplanes bombed areas in northern Iraq and Syria.

The ministry said Turkish fighter jets hit targets belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Sinjar and Karacak.

Esta Media Network reporters said the Turkish warplanes conducted airstrikes in a refugee camp in Makhmour and Sinjar mountains late on Tuesday.

The Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Service said there were casualties and damages, without giving further details.

In Syria, the Turkish ministry said its warplanes also hit targets of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Derik.

“Terrorists’ shelters, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots and so-called headquarters and training camps were targeted,” the ministry statement said, without specifying exactly when the strikes occurred.

Turkey regards the PKK and YPG as “terrorist groups”.
