Authorities in Sulaimani announce two-day holiday due to heavy snowfalls

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities in Sulaimani on Monday announced a two-day holiday in the province due to heavy snowfalls.

A blanket of snow covered the city of Sulaimani and its surrounding areas on Monday.

In a statement, Governor Haval Abubakir told Esta Media Network that there would be a two-day holiday in the province, affecting government’s institutions.

Meanwhile, the directorate of education said it had decided to suspend exams in the province from Tuesday until Jan. 25 due to “the cold wave”.

Earlier, the directorate of traffic police said it had closed several roads connecting Sulaimani to Darbandikhan, Penjwen, Qaiwan, and Mergapan areas due to heavy snowfalls.

“Movement on the roads of Tasluja to Bazian and Dukan to Tasluja is dangerous,” it added, calling on drivers to avoid using those roads.

The Directorate General of Meteorology and Seismology said the province saw 12 centimeters of snow on Monday.
