SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Rockets that target embassies in Iraq are “callous attempts” to destabilize the country, the United Nations said on Thursday.

A woman and a child were wounded in a rocket attack directed against the U.S. embassy in Baghdad on Thursday.

One of the rockets fell in a school, according to the Iraqi military.

“Peace and security are prerequisites to tackle urgent domestic priorities and reaffirm Iraqi sovereignty,” UNAMI said in a tweet.

Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned attacks targeting diplomatic missions and endangering civilians.

“Targeting diplomatic missions and endangering civilians are a criminal terrorist act and a blow to Iraq’s interests and its international reputation,” Salih said in a tweet.

“We must stand united firmly against these crimes,” he added.

A serious of attacks this month, which the United States blames on Iran-backed militia groups, have targeted bases or installations hosting U.S. military and diplomatic personnel.

The Iran-aligned militia have in previous years carried out dozens of similar attacks, mostly causing little harm, but the attacks have become more sophisticated in the past year including with the use of fixed-wing and multi-rotor drones.
