SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Tuesday he was “saddened” by the death European Parliament President David Sassoli.
“My heartfelt condolences to his family, @Europarl_EN colleagues and EU representation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” he said in a tweet.
Sassoli, 65, died at 1.15 a.m. (0015 GMT) in a hospital in Italy, his spokesperson and office said.
Sassoli, an Italian socialist and former journalist from Florence, had been hospitalized last month due to a “serious complication” related to his immune system, his office had said on Monday, according to Reuters.
He had been president of the 705-seat parliament since 2019.
