A number of detainees accused of burning Piramagroon public library released: Asayish

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish security forces released a number of suspects who were detained over burning a public library in a town in Sulaimani province last year, Asayish said on Thursday.

Spokesman of Asayish directorate in Sulaimani Yaseen Sami’ said a number of the detainees were released on bail following a judge order.

Sulaimani’s Asayish said on Tuesday that its forces had arrested a group of people over involvement in torching a public library and several other governmental offices in Piramagroon town, northwest of Sulaimani.

In November, students took to the streets in the Kurdistan Region, calling on the Kurdish government to resume payment of their monthly stipends suspended since 2015.

In Piramagroon, a group of people torched the public library and several other government offices.

“Some people who were directed took advantage of the protests to disrupt security and tranquility and to create chaos,” said Asayish, which also released confession footage of the detainees appeared to be 18 in the video.

Asayish added that the group had torched the Piramagroon public library, children culture center and the directorates of traffic police and national card.

The Asayish spokesman told Esta Media Network that the investigating judge would decide on the cases of the detainees remained in custody.

“Their release was by efforts of Bafel Jalal Talabani and support from Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani,” Sami’ said.
