SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A court in Kirkuk on Monday sentenced two men to life in prison for sexually assaulting a disabled woman near the city in April.

Kirkuk Criminal Court ruled to sentence Ibrahim Rukan Hassan Mohammed and Ibrahim Mohammed Shakir Sabir to life in prison.

Footage circulated on social media in April showing a man sexually assaulting a disabled Kurdish woman in Pirde checkpoint (Altun Kupri) between Kirkuk and Erbil cities. Another person was filming it.

Kirkuk Operations Commander Saad Harbiya said the perpetrators were detained after the woman’s husband filed a lawsuit against those who had carried out the assault.

Three committees from the Kurdistan Parliament called on the Iraqi Council of Representatives to form a committee to investigate the assault. They accused members of militia groups of carrying out the act.
