SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The two main Iraqi Sunni alliances have reached an agreement on the posts in the new federal government, Iraqi media reported on Sunday.

Leader of Taqadum Alliance Mohammed al-Halbousi and Head of al-Azm Alliance Khamis al-Khanjar agreed on government’s positions in UAE, Shafaq News reported.

Halbousi will be Sunni’s candidate for the speaker of the Council of Representatives and Khanjar for the vice president, according to the news outlet.

“The meeting of the two Sunni leaders in the UAE supported the renewal of a second term for Halbousi, and all political parties were informed about it, including the Sadrist movement,” Shafaq quoted a source as saying.

“The agreement between Khanjar and Halbousi provides of the Sunni forces for the latter’s candidacy for the speaker of parliament in exchange for supporting the nomination of Khamis for the position of the vice president.”

Iraqi parties have begun negotiations on the formation of a new government following the announcement of final results of the October elections in Iraq.

Sadrist movement led by Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr won 73 seats in the 329-seat house. State of Law Alliance won 33 seats, while al-Fatih Alliance secured 17 seats.
