SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces launched anti-Islamic State (ISIS) operations in three provinces in west of the country, the military said on Sunday.
The security forces launched three separate operations in Rutba district in Anbar province, Tharthar area in Saladin governorate and Hadhir district in Nineveh, Iraq’s security media cell said in a statement.
“The operations were to pursue remnants of ISIS terrorist gangs, clear the lands, combat crime, and create a safe environment,” it added.
Earlier on Sunday, the Iraqi military along with Hashid al-Shaabi launched a security operation from six directions in Hamrin mountain range.
Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
