Kurdistan journalists’ syndicate condemns attacks against journalists in Erbil

The Kurdistan journalists syndicate says the journalists were released by efforts of deputy prime minister Qubad Talabani

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Journalists’ Syndicate on Wednesday condemned attacks against journalists during students’ protests in Erbil.

Dozens of students protested outside the ministry of higher education and scientific research in Erbil on Tuesday, calling on the government to resume monthly payment of stipends, which it has suspended since 2015.

The KJS’ committee to defend freedom of journalism and rights of journalists said a number of journalists were attacked by the security forces during the protests in Erbil.

“Unfortunately, with tensions on streets and protests, attacks and obstacles against channels and journalists continue,” the committee said in a statement early on Wednesday.

The syndicate’s committee said it “condemns violence against any person, group, and especially journalists”.

It also stressed that the security forces should protect journalists and not to prevent them from covering.

Students also protested in Sulaimani and Halabja provinces on Tuesday.
