SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces launched an operation to secure Hamrin mountains in Diyala province on Tuesday, the military said.
In a statement, the security media cell said units from the Iraqi military, police and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) launched a joint operation to clear Hamrin mountain on Tuesday morning.
The operation was to “enhance security and stability, to combat crime and terrorism, and enforce law,” the security media cell added.
The operation came hours after an Iraqi soldier was killed and three others were wounded in Diyala province.
In 2017, Baghdad announced victory over Islamic State (ISIS), and attacks in Iraqi cities have since become much rarer, although troops continue to fight ISIS sleeper cells in mountainous and desert areas.
The militants still mount deadly operations, mostly at night and in remote areas.
