SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Monday that the Kurdistan Region can be turned to a breadbasket for Iraq and the region.

The KRG premier laid the foundation stone for a food project in a ceremony in Erbil. The project including 20 silos costs $250 million. It is used to store 500,000 tons of farmers’ wheat.

“Kurdistan is as richer as it can become a breadbasket for Iraq and the region if we can benefit from its soil, and a major part of people can also become investor, and won’t only be user,” Barzani said during the ceremony.

Meanwhile, KRG Minister of Agriculture Begard Talabani said during the ceremony that her ministry was planning to provide food security, particularly wheat.

“The completion of this project will affect the Region’s food security and farmers’ incomes,” Talabani added.
