PUK delegation meets Sadrist movement in Baghdad

Khalid Shwani, who leads a PUK delegation to Baghdad, shakes hands with head of Sadrist negotiating delegation Hassan Azari in Baghdad, November 11, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) delegation met with Sadrist movement in Baghdad on Thursday to discuss coordination in the next phase.

The PUK delegation led by Khalid Shwani, member of the party’s leadership, held talks with Hassan Azari, head of Sadrist negotiation delegation, in the Iraqi capital.

The talks aimed to reach “understanding on coordination in the next phase”, Shwani said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the PUK delegation met with Falih Fayyadh, head of Aqdi Watani alliance, to discuss the latest security and political developments in the country.

The delegation visited Baghdad on Tuesday to discuss the formation of a new Iraqi government with the political parties in the Iraqi capital.

Head of PUK Politburo’s press office Sitran Abdulla said the delegation would hold several meetings with the Iraqi parties to discuss the formation of a new Iraqi government.

The delegation’s visit came one day after the Iraqi electoral commission said a manual vote recount in some polling stations where complaints were filed did not show any “fraud”.

Final results will be announced after they are validated by a legal committee, it added.

The big winner this time, with more than 70 seats according to the initial count, was the movement of Moqtada Sadr, a Shia Muslim preacher who campaigned as a nationalist and critic of Iran.
