Aftermath of flash floods that hit Erbil on Saturday

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities in Erbil said hundreds of families have been affected by flash floods triggered by heavy rains on Saturday.

The office of Erbil governor Omed Khoshnaw on Monday released data of damages which families in the flood-affected areas suffered on Saturday.

Home furnishings and equipment of 500 families were “completely destroyed”, the governor’s office said, after a committee was formed to assess the damages.

As many as 130 cars, 127 houses, two schools and a number of other projects were also damaged in the floods.

There were no casualties in the storms. On Sunday, Erbil police said 25 people were rescued by the civil defense teams and aviation teams.

The security forces also detained the owner of Zerin City on Sunday, after the floods caused severe damages to the residential complex.

Heavy rain triggered floods in parts of the Kurdistan Region on Saturday. Erbil was the only province to see severe damages due to the storms.
