SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani said the party is ready to cooperate with other parties for “unity” in Baghdad.
Talabani met with Russian Ambassador to Iraq Elbrus Kutrashev and Consul General Oleg Levin Vladimirovich in Sulaimani on Saturday.
They discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the new phase after the October 10 parliamentary elections as well as the Kurds’ role in the new Iraqi government, his office said in a statement.
Both sides agreed that a suitable environment was necessary to resolve the issues peacefully and through understanding, the statement read.
“The current circumstance that has come ahead requires Kurds to reorganize their home and to have a united speech in Baghdad,” he said.
“The PUK welcomes such a step and will cooperate for unity so that we will protect our national identity and fight for our rights within the framework of [Iraqi] Constitution,” he noted.
Talabani further said the internal and regional changes “encourage us to put aside the differences and work with a strong will for real reform and more service, and let the official institutions carry out their duties,” according to the statement.
Regarding the issues in northeast Syria, Talabani reiterated support and political stability for the region, considering dialogue and solution to the issues as a factor for peace and security in the region.
He also called on Russia to support and cooperate more in this regard, Talabani’s office said.
