Kurdistan president meets Qatar’s Emir, prime minister in Doha

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Sunday.

Barzani arrived in Doha on Saturday on an official visit, according to the Region’s presidency.

Barzani and Sheikh Tamim discussed relations and cooperation between Qatar and the Kurdistan Region, office of Qatar’s emir said in a statement.

“I had the pleasure to meet Emir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in Doha,” Barzani said in a tweet.

“We held talks on strengthening and developing our bilateral relations, in addition to the most important issues of common interest in Iraq and the Middle East,” he added.

Qatar’s Prime Minister Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and Defense Minister Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah also attended the meeting.

In a statement, the Kurdistan Region’s presidency said Barzani also met with Qatar’s prime minister and defense minister separately.

They discussed Iraq’s October 10 elections and predictions for the future of political process in Iraq as well as developing relations of Iraq and Kurdistan Region with Qatar, it added.

Direct flights of Qatari Airways between Qatar and the Kurdistan Region were also discussed during the meeting, the statement read.

Efforts to open Consulate-General of Qatar was also discussed during the meeting, according to the statement.
