World AIDS Day: Kurdistan Region records 54 infections

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Amid the 2022 World AIDS Day, Kurdistan Region Health Ministry confirmed that at least 54 infections with the disease have been recorded, according to the available data.

Each year, on December 1, the world marks World AIDS Day.

Health Minister Saman Barznji said they have carried out 538 testing for suspected individuals with AIDS throughout the past eleven months, and 54 confirmed positive.

“Among the number, 40 of them were foreigners and the rest were Iraqis,” said the Minister.

According to Available data from the Health Ministry, currently, there are 12 AIDS cases in Erbil, 19 in Sulaimani, and in Duhok there are seven.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic and potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

HIV attacks the immune system, weakening it to the point where it cannot fight infections.

In 2021, some 1.5 million people became newly infected with HIV, bringing the total number of people living with HIV to 38.4 million, according to UNAIDS.
