Iran continues to shell areas in Kurdistan Region

Smoke rises after Iran bombards a mountainous area in Bradost region, September 10, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iran’s artillery shelled areas in the Kurdistan Region’s Sidakan area on Monday, a Kurdish opposition group said.

The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had bombarded heights in the Kurdistan Region since Thursday.

The IRGC had used “16 bomb-laden drones” in the attacks on the Region’s areas, the PDKI’s Peshmerga command said.

“It has also attacked the heights more than 15 times by using artillery and missiles,” the PDKI added.

The Kurdish party further said no casualties had been reported, but they caused damages to the area.

Iran accuses the Kurdish armed groups based on the Kurdistan Region’s border areas of disrupting its security.

On Sunday, secretary of Iran’s supreme security council Ali Shamkhani asked Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi who paid a one-day visit to Tehran to expel the Kurdish opposition parties in Iraq.

He urged “the immediate disarmament and expulsion of those groups from Iraq,” state news agency IRNA reported.

Last week, commander of IRGC Ground Force Mohammad Pakpour warned people of the Kurdistan Region to stay away from bases used by the Kurdish opposition parties on the border with Iran.

“Iraq and the officials of the northern region of this country have been given the necessary warnings,” he said.

There are frequent clashes along Iran’s border with the Kurdistan Region between Iranian security forces and Kurdish armed groups such as the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) and the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK).
