Qadia camp blast: KDP official says it was ‘PKK bomb’, PKK media accuses Turkey

People gather at a site where an explosion occurred in a tent in Qadia camp in Zakho, August 30, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A security official belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Tuesday accused the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) of carrying out a blast in a displacement camp in Zakho, while PKK media alleged that Turkey bombed the site.

An explosion took place in a tent at Qadia camp for displaced Yazidis in Zakho district late on Monday, killing two children and injuring three others, according to Esta Media Network’s reporter.

Director of KDP Asayish in Zakho Shivan Sindi alleged that the PKK planted an improvised explosive device in the camp.

“The bomb was planted to target Asayish officer Hassan Smoqi,” he told KDP-affiliated media. “The PKK has tried to kill that person several times before.”

There are around 3,000 tents and caravans in the camp, where displaced Yazidis are sheltered.

PKK media, meanwhile, reported that Turkey had carried out an airstrike on the camp.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion. The reporter said the security forces had launched an investigation into the blast.
