SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish security forces detained two Islamic State (ISIS) leaders and a group of “terrorists” during a series of operations in Sulaimani and Halabja, authorities said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Kurdistan Region’s Security Agency said it received information about the presence of a group of ISIS militants who planned to carry out “terrorist acts” in Sulaimani and Halabja provinces.
The security forces in Sulaimani and Sharazoor carried out four “big operations and similar campaigns” to arrest four “terrorists” in Halabja late on Tuesday, the agency added.
“Two of them were Daesh leaders and had participated and supervised several crimes,” the agency stated, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State.
In Sulaimani, the security forces detained another “terrorist” in a separate operation, it said.
“Thorough investigations have been launched and the detained terrorists … were militants of Daesh in southern state, and they had participated in several crimes against humanity … and planned to carry out terrorist acts,” the security agency further said.
