SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq’s counter-terrorism service has recently received more military aid including weapons and equipment from the U.S.-led Coalition forces, the Iraqi military said on Thursday.
Yehia Rasool, spokesman for commander-in-chief of the armed forces, said the counter-terrorism service received more than $6 million of weapons, equipment and vehicles from the Coalition forces.
“Our partnership w/the #ISF is built on coop that serves to bolster Iraq’s military capacity, combat terrorism, & ensure Iraq’s long-term stability,” Coalition Spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto said in a tweet.
The provision of the military aid was through the U.S. Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund (CTEF) program.
In May, the counter-terrorism service received ammunition and weapons valued $3 million through the CTEF program.
The U.S.-led Coalition forces also provided weapons and ammunition to the Iraqi military in May, worth more than $204,000.
The Coalition Forces led by the United States was formed in 2014 when ISIS militants overran large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria. The Coalition backed Iraqi and Kurdish forces to defeat ISIS militants in the country.
In December, the U.S.-led Coalition forces told Esta Media Network that it had funded more than $5 billion of support to equip and train Iraqi and Kurdish forces since 2014.
