SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will fine people who do not wear a mask in public, as part of measures to contain spread of the coronavirus.

The KRG’s High Supreme Committee to contain coronavirus held a meeting on Wednesday to take new measures to prevent further spread of the virus.

“Those who are not committed to wearing a face mask will be fined,” KRG Spokesman Jutiar Adil in a press conference.

He further said the border crossings of Bashmakh, Haji Omran and Parvezkhan with Iran and Ibrahim Khalil with Turkey would be reopened but civilians should be tested on the border crossings.

The Kurdish government closed its border crossings for tourism in February in an attempt to prevent spread of COVID-19 to the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region had recorded 57,365 cases of the novel coronavirus as of Tuesday, of which 2,040 died and 35,705 recovered.
