SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces confiscated one ton of explosive materials in Baghdad, the Security Media Cell said on Tuesday.
The Iraqi military said units of the national security agency seized 1,000 kilograms of high explosive materials used in the manufacture of car bombs and improvised explosive devices.
“These groups were seeking to use them in carrying out terrorist operations inside the capital,” the Iraqi military added.
“They were removed by the specialists and handed over to the related authorities for the purpose of destruction,” it stated.
Yehia Rasool, spokesman for commander-in-chief for the Iraqi armed forces, said the ammunition was seized in the so-called southern sector of Islamic State (ISIS) militants.
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
