SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi intelligence units arrested a senior Islamic State (ISIS) member in coordination with security forces in the Kurdistan Region, the intelligence agency said on Monday.
Iraqi Security Media Cell said the intelligence units managed to arrest the so-called governor of Fallujah in coordination of Asayish forces in the Kurdistan Region.
He was “wanted in accordance with Article 4 of counter-terrorism law for belonging to ISIS terrorist gangs,” the Iraqi military said in a statement.
“He confessed he had carried out dozens of terrorist operations against the security forces and innocent citizens,” the agency added.
Recently, Iraqi security services have increased coordination with the security forces in the Kurdistan Region to detain people wanted by courts and suspects linked to Islamic State (ISIS).
The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.
Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
