SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces found launching pads where rockets fired toward Peshmerga forces stationed in south of Erbil, the Iraqi military said on Tuesday.
Several rockets landed near Prde-Dibis frontline of the Peshmerga forces on Monday night, without causing casualties.
Iraqi Security Media Cell said the security forces had found six rocket launch pads in Nabi Awa area near Akasha mountain in northern Kirkuk.
“They were used by an outlaw group to launch six missiles towards the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” the Iraqi military said in a statement.
“The rockets landed in an empty area on the border between Erbil and Kirkuk, without any casualties,” it added.
It further said the security forces were still investigation to find perpetrators and to bring them to justice.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamic State (ISIS) militants are believed to stage such attacks.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
Iraqi commanders have warned that the group has been regrouping in northern Iraq and relying on women to secure logistical support for their operatives in the Hamrin mountain range.
The area is caught between the jurisdictions of the Iraqi security forces and the Peshmerga forces.
