SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi authorities denied reports that a polling station caught fire in Nineveh governorate on Saturday night.

Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a statement that the school which caught fire in the village of Kharaib Jabr in Makhmour district last night did not contain any electoral device or papers.

It further said authorities in Makhmour found out during an investigation that the cause of the fire was due to an “electric short circuit”.

The security media cell also called on media outlets to avoid publishing false information.

Some Iraqi media reported that a biometric registration center caught fire in Makhmour district last night, without providing further details.

Iraq is preparing to hold early parliamentary election on October 10. The elections scheduled for June 6 was postponed by the Council of Ministers after the electoral commission requested the delay in an effort to complete technical preparations.

In July, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi called for early elections to take place on June 6, 2021, which was one of the main demands of anti-government protesters who organized months of mass demonstrations beginning in October 2020.
