SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Uncertainty looms over the fate of 23,000 students as teachers and staff at Sulaimani University go on a general strike due to unpaid salaries for the months of August and September.
The University Council of Sulaimani University said that it convened on Wednesday to discuss the pressing issue and unanimously considered the possibility of suspending the upcoming academic year.
This decision has a direct impact on the future of the enrolled students, who were expecting the new academic year to commence in early September.
Taking responsibility for the situation, the council has issued a memorandum to relevant parties and the public, outlining their concerns and demands.
The council expressed unwavering support for the rights, salaries, and financial entitlements of the dedicated teachers and employees of Sulaimani University. They called for immediate action to resolve the ongoing financial challenges faced by these individuals.
Additionally, the council emphasized the need for swift resolution of financial issues concerning the various colleges, laboratories, and boarding facilities within Sulaimani University.These matters must be promptly addressed to ensure the smooth functioning of the educational institution.
The council also urged the relevant parties to make timely decisions regarding two crucial matters. Firstly, the disbursement of allowances for the previous academic year (2022-2023) for Sulaimani University students must be promptly addressed. Secondly, it is imperative to determine the allowances for students in the upcoming academic year (2023-2024) without delay.
Sulaimani University has not yet set a specific date for the commencement of the new academic year (2023-2024). The situation remains uncertain as the students’ new academic year is at an imminent risk.
