SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The United States on Wednesday called on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to expedite the reforms within the Peshmerga Ministry in order to continue its support, according to a statement.
KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani received a US delegation led by Dana Stroul, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, his office said in a statement.
In the meeting, the two sides discussed a wide range of issues, including the fight against terror and the reforms within the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces.
Meanwhile, DASD Stroul expressed her country’s willingness for the continued cooperation between the Kurdistan Regio and the US to combat terror.
She also extended words of appreciation regarding the role of the Peshmerga forces in the war against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) terror group.
In the meantime, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that the Peshmerga-US cooperation resulted in attaining great achievements, wishing to further cement and strengthen this coalition between the two sides.
Both sides also agreed on further collaborations to eliminate the terrorism threats in the region, according to the statement.
During the meeting, the officials also highlighted the reforms whining the Peshmerga Ministry, and the US called on the KRG to expedite the process.
“The US desiring to continue the support for the Peshmerga,” the statement said.
In the meantime, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated the KRG’s willingness to expedite the Peshmerga reforms, stressing that “the political conflicts should not affect enduring the reforms.”
Talabani also called for appointing an acting minister for the Peshmerga Ministry to oversee the reform process, as well as implement the agreements and memorandums of understandings that have been signed between the US and Peshmerga.
