SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq’s top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani on Wednesday received U.N. envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and UNAOC High Representative Miguel Angel Moratinos in Najaf.
The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported that the cleric received the top U.N. officials, and in a meeting, they discussed the importance of concerted efforts to reject violence and hatred.
The sides in the meeting have also stressed the achievement of justice in the societies of Iraq, according to INA.
INA added that Sistani also stressed “the significance of concerted efforts in promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence, rejecting violence and hatred, and consolidating the values of harmony based.”
“The tragedies suffered by many peoples and ethnic and social groups in many parts of the world are the result of the intellectual and religious persecution practiced against them,” said Sistani.
“We are today in Najaf on a special day, where we discussed with the supreme religious authority Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani the importance of his wisdom and support for the peaceful coexistence of all components in Iraq and abroad,” Plasschaert said in a press conference following the meeting.
“There is great value in our meeting with Sayyed Al-Sistani,” She added.
