SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani met with Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei on Tuesday in the Iranian capital after he arrived there amid an official visit, state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA) said.

During his meeting with Khamenei, PM Sudani expressed his thanks to the Islamic Republic of Iran for its support for Iraq, particularly in the war on terrorism, according to the INA.

INA also added that Sudani stressed the need to continue these joint efforts to confront terrorism, extremism, and drugs.

Sudani has highlighted the importance of maintaining bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, noting that “the government is committed to the Iraqi constitution, which prohibits making Iraq as a base land for aggression against its neighbors.”

For his part, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei, congratulated the Prime Minister on assuming his duties as head of government, INA added.

“Iraq is a great country with its resources and youth, and its people deserve stability and services,” Khamenei told Sudani.

“The security of Iraq is the security of the Islamic Republic, calling on the Iraqi people for more unity and solidarity,” Khamenei stressed.

Iraq’s Sudani arrived in Tehran following an invitation by President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi. He was earlier received by Iran’s Raisi at the Saadabad Palace there, discussing different aspects of ties between both countries in various fields.

Raisi and Sudani stressed that Iraq’s relationship with the Islamic Republic is “strong, deeply rooted and historical.”

“Iraq’s status is essential for ensuring peace and stability in the region, and stability is the responsibility of the governments of the countries of the region,” said Raisi in a joint press conference with Sudani following the meeting.

“The presence of foreign forces in the region increases security risks,” he added. Meanwhile, following Raisi’s words, PM Sudani confirmed that they will not allow the use of Iraqi territory to “threaten” Iran’s security.
