SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi President Latif Rashid on Wednesday received a significant invitation to attend the upcoming 2022 United Nations Climate Change summit in Egypt.
President of Iraq Latif Rashid and U.S. Ambassador Alina L. Romanowski met in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to a statement from the Presidental office.
During the meeting, Ambassador Romanowski handed an invitation letter to President Rashid to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly known as COP27, from 6 to 18 November 2022.
The COP27 event will be hosted in the green city of Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt during which the participants discuss the climate crises. While the event is expected to welcome over 35,000 delegates and over 2,000 speakers.
The letter was specifically written for the Iraqi President from John Kerry, U.S. special presidential envoy for climate, the statement said.
“Iraq wants to join the efforts, confronting the climate crises with strength because it’s one the countries that the climate change has made a significant effect on its environment and economy and people’s livelihood,” the statement added.
Iraq is particularly vulnerable to climate change, having already witnessed record low rainfall and high temperatures in recent years.
