SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Turkish drones on Monday attacked targets in the city of Qamishli in northeast Syria (Rojava), according to local news outlets.
A Turkish drone strike targeted a construction site, hitting a facility in the city, news outlets belonging to the Kurdish forces in the region reported.
Hawar News Agency (ANHA), a local media outlet, said that the drone targeted a facility in the center of the city during evening hours and resulted in material damages.
ANHA also said that casualties were reported without giving further details.
Turkey regularly launches airstrikes outside of its southern borders that correspond to northern Syria, a Kurdish-held area, saying the attacks aim to eradicate the threats to Turkey’s national security by targeting the Kurdish groups and other linked armed forces.
In the meantime, Turkey has launched three military incursions into the Kurdish- held area since 2016, targeting Kurdish groups and people’s defense forces (YPG).
Ankara deems the People’s Protection Units (YPG) as a terrorist organization and the Syrian offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The PKK launched an insurgency against the Turkish state in 1984 and more than 40,000 people have been killed in the ensuing conflict. The PKK is regarded as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
