SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi President, Latish Rashid, and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert as well as President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani held a joint meeting on Monday in Baghdad.
Mam Jalal Palace is where the trilateral meeting took place in the Iraqi capital. It was joined by newly named President Rashid and Chief of UNAMI Hennis-Plasschaert as well as President of the PUK Bafel Talabani.
The overall situation in Iraq was focused on during the meeting, according to a statement released by Talabani’s media office.
“Acceleration in the formation of the new government along with passing the long-standing stalemate were discussed,” the statement said.
The officials stressed national dialogue between the parties in order to complete the legal and constitutional procedures, pointing at establishing a strong national government that meets the people’s aspirations.
The three sides also expressed their enthusiasm to strengthen the pillars of statehood with the consolidation of the judiciary power, and providing a suitable environment to confront corruption, preventing the waste of public wealth as well.
Moreover, it also called the constitutional institutions to serve all sides far from “discrimination” and work to resolve the outstanding issues of Erbil-Baghdad.
Speaking about Erbil-Baghdad’s outstanding issues, the President of the PUK, Bafel Talabani laid emphasis on resolving them but based on a constitutional basis.
“Neither national issues nor people’s interests should be mixed with the political disputes again,” President Talabani said.
“We must follow late leader Mam Jalal’s path, both discussion and dialogue must the bases to resolve the issues,” he added.
