SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq and Germany Foreign Ministers via phone call on Tuesday discussed the recent Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region’s borders and bilateral relations between Berlin and Baghdad.
The State News Agency INA reported that Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein held a phone call with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock.
Late last month, Iranian elite forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rained missiles on Erbil and Sulaiamni provinces.
It targeted bases of Kurdish opposition groups, whom Iran blamed for fueling the ongoing protests there over the death of a woman in police custody, wide protests engulfing the country and counting for more nearly a month.
“The government is keen to adopt a balanced policy in establishing Relationships with everyone, especially neighboring countries,” the Iraqi Foreign Minister said.
The Iraqi Minister also emphasized the need for joint work in protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and preventing external interference in the country’s affairs, as it affects the overall stability of the region, according to INA.
While the German Minister, Baerbock reaffirmed her country’s support for Iraq on all fronts.
She stressed the need to respect the sovereignty of Iraq, and called on uniting efforts to support the Iraqi government, especially in the field of security, INA said.
At least 13 people were killed and over 50 injured in the Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region, according to the Health Ministery of the Region.
