SULAIMANI (ESTA) — High-ranking Russian and Chinese diplomats in Iraq on Tuesday congratulated Bafel Jalal Talabani on being elected as President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
After three years of adopting the co-presidential system for the PUK, the leadership council of the party dismissed the system early this week and voted for Talabani as the sole President of the PUK.
Talabani’s election as President brought a sequence of wide range reactions throughout the country, Kurdish and Iraqi leaders were thrilled and warmly bided congratulations.
Russian ambassador to Iraq Elbrus Kutrashev in the name of his embassy in Baghdad congratulated Talabani for being named as PUK President, according to a press release.
“We are thrilled to send you our loveliest congratulations for being elected as PUK President.” Ambassador Kutrashev told Talabani.
“We appreciate our strong tie with the PUK, and wish for more support,” Kutrashev said.
At the same time, President Talabani received Chinese ambassador to Iraq Cui Wei on Tuesday in Sulaimani’s Dabashan, Wei bided his warmest congratulations to Talabani due to the same occasion and praised his role in safeguarding the PUK.
“We are importantly considering President Talabani’s position, we are sure that PUK is in a safe hand” Chinese ambassador Wei said during the meeting with Talabani.
“Talabani’s efforts in the past prove that PUK is the preserver and the continuer of President Mam Jalal’s wise policy” Wei continued.
