SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Syrian Suspected attack on Friday killed at least nine people in a crowded market in Aleppo’s al-Bab town held by Turkey-backed opposition fighters in northern Syria.
Opposition war monitor and emergency responders reported that in a local market of the al-Bab town, a rebel-held area, nine people were killed including at least five children in a rocket attack.
Paramedic groups also reported that at least 28 others were wounded. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, blamed Syrian government forces for the shelling.
Al-Bab falls within the areas of Aleppo province held by Turkish-backed rebels, but other parts are held by Syrian government troops backed by Russia, according to Reuters.
Syria’s conflict that began in March 2011, has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million.
President Bashar Assad’s forces have regained control of most parts of Syria over the past few years, with the help of their allies, Russia and Iran.
Turkey has launched three major cross-border operations into Syria since 2016 and controls some territories in the north.
The Turkish government backs thousands of troops in the area and backs a coalition of armed groups opposed to Assad under the banner of the Syrian National Army (SNA).
The northwest near the Turkish border is the last area still in the hands of the opposition.
