SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr met supreme religious authority Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf on Saturday according to Iraq media reports.
Iraq media reported that al-Sadr’s visit to the house of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is to attend Ahura mourning in Shiite’s holy month of Muharram gathering at Sistian’s house.
Ashura is a yearly commemoration session that Sistani holds, a Shiite festival observed on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar to commemorate the death of the martyr Imam Hussein bin Ali at the Battle of Karbala in 680 ad, according to Islamic Shiite sources.
Yet, no further details are available regarding the content of the meeting whether it is a political visit to discuss the recent disputes among Shiites or not.
However, the visit came after Muqtada al-Sadr’s meeting with the United Nations special envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert earlier on Friday in Hanana’s of Najaf.
