High PUK delegation headed by Bafel Talabani arrives in Baghdad

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A high-level delegation of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan arrived in Baghdad headed by the party’s president Bafel Jalal Talabani on Wednesday.

The delegation is secluded to conduct series of a crucial meetings with the Iraqi high officials as well as political parties to discuss the latest steps towards the formation of the new Iraqi government.

Earlier on Monday the Shiite coordination framework finally announced that it has nominated Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani for Iraq’s premiership.

Political disagreement since the end of the latest general election which was held in October 2021, has hindered the parliament to elect the president of the country. The Iraqi council of representatives had failed three times due to a lack of quorum and boycotting the sessions by the MPs.

The disputes among the main Kurdish parties that run the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq meanwhile prevent the selection of a president – who, once chosen by parliament, names a prime minister.

More than nine months since an October election, lawmakers tasked with choosing a president and prime minister looked no closer to an agreement, bringing the country to a record 290 days without a head of state or cabinet.

Under a power-sharing system designed to avoid sectarian conflict, Iraq’s president is a Kurd, its prime minister a Shia, and its parliament speaker a Sunni.
