SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The United Nations security council on Tuesday held its extraordinary session regarding Turkey’s deadly bombing and its presence on Iraq’s soil.
The members of the United Nations Security Council condemned the Turkish aggression on Iraqi territory, in particular the deadly bombing of Duhok’s Parakh resort.
Overall the members were consistent about preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and withdrawing the Turkish troops on the country’s territory.
Speaking about Duhok’a Parakh deadly bombing, targeting a touristic site, Iraq’s foreign minister Fuad Hussain has explicitly accused Turkey, saying, “ the Turkish army committed an aggression against the lands and sovereignty of Iraq and the lives of its citizens, by violent artillery bombardment on Iraqi families while they were in the Parkh resort in Dohuk”.
Hussian exposed concrete shreds of evidence in front of the council member about Turkey’s complicity in the Parakh bombing.
“A national committee was formed by the Iraqi government to investigate the attack, which collected evidence from the site of the attack, which included fragments of 155 mm heavy artillery projectiles used by the Turkish army in the area” Hussain explained.
The minister called Turkey’s presence illegal and warned against the continuation of the aggressive behavior of the Turkish army.
“The continuity of the attacks may push things to unimaginable consequences, amid a state of massive popular anger sweeping Iraq from the south to the south,” he said.
U.N. Envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert also addressed the council during the meeting that “Iraq is demanding the withdrawal of Turkish forces from its lands”.
“Any attacks on Iraqi soil must stop,” she said.
Turkey’s military operations deep into Iraq’s territory have always sparked conflict between the officials in both Ankara and Baghdad.
The country’s presence on Iraq’s soil backs to a deep-rooted conflict with Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), which Turkey considers the group as a critical threat to its national security.
However, the hostility between the PKK and Turkey triggered an unsafe environment for civilians and caused the evacuation of thousands from their homeland.
