Danish national killed in roadside bombing in Duhok province

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A Danish national was killed by a roadside bomb while cycling in the Kurdistan Region on Thursday, according to authorities.

In a statement, Duhok police said on Friday that Torbjorn Methmann and his companion, William Karlsson, were cycling in the Region when Methmann’s bicycle struck the roadside bomb.

They were en route to Amedi town in the Duhok province, police added.

Police blamed the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for being behind the bombing.

A health official at Kani Mase said the incident took place near the villages of Barukhe and Kamberke in Amedi district, northeast of Duhok.

Methmann succumbed to his injuries at the hospital in Kani Mase sub-district, the official noted.

Meanwhile, authorities in Denmark confirmed that a Danish citizen had died in the Kurdistan Region but did not say more, according to AP.

Iraq is strewn with land mines and unexploded ordnance left over from years of conflict. Authorities in the Region has accused the PKK of planting bombs targeting Turkish troops stationed in areas on the border with Turkey.
