SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi and Kurdish officials held a meeting in Erbil on Tuesday to discuss the implementation of an agreement on Sinjar.
Iraqi National Security Adviser Qassem Araji met with Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Interior Rebar Ahmed to implement the agreement reached between Erbil and Baghdad on Sinjar security and governance.
U.N. envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert also attended the meeting.
On October 9, the federal government and the KRG reached an agreement to normalize the governance and security situation in Sinjar.
The agreement “ends the power of intruding groups, and paves the way for the reconstruction of the city and the return of its people in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government,” said Iraqi government’s spokesman Ahmed Mulla Talal.
The Kurdish interior minister Rebar Ahmed said in a joint press conference with Araji that they would work to normalize the situation, facilitate return of displaced people and reorganize governance and administration in Sinjar.
Ahmad further said a mayor would be chosen for Sinjar in coordination with the federal government.
Regarding the U.N. envoy’s participation in the meeting, Ahmed said the United Nations “plays the role of a monitor” and that it would have its report when a side did not commit to the agreement.
The Iraqi official, for his part, said Erbil and Baghdad would continue to resolve the issues and that there “is a strong will to resolve [issues] wherever there is a conflict.”
“Good steps have been taken to normalize the situation, return the displaced and keep away those who harm [Sinjar] security,” Araji added.
