SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi extended his congratulations to Joe Biden on wining the U.S. election on Saturday, saying he looks forward to working together on strengthening ties between both countries.
Democrat Joe Biden won the election on Saturday after a victory in the battleground state of Pennsylvania put him over the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes.
“Congratulations to President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President-Elect @KamalaHarris. I look forward to working with you on strengthening the strategic ties that bind Iraq and the United States, building on common values between our nations to overcome challenges together,” Kadhimi said in a tweet early on Sunday.
In a separate twee, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said he also looks forward to working with Biden to further strengthen partnership and bilateral ties between the Region and U.S.
On Saturday night, Iraqi President Barham Salih, Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Co-leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Lahur Sheikh Jangi and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Leader Masoud Barzani congratulated Biden on the electoral victory.
Biden had a 273 to 214 lead in the state-by-state Electoral College vote that determines the winner, having won Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes to put him over the 270 he needed to secure the presidency, according to Edison Research.
His projected victory came after four days of nail-biting suspense over the outcome of Tuesday’s election, with the counting of votes in a handful of battleground states ongoing thanks to a flood of mail-in ballots.
