SULAIMANI (ESTA) — U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) thwarted a “major operation” by Islamic State (ISIS) aimed to target a prison in Hasakah, the group said on Monday.
The SDF said in a tweet that its forces engaged in clashes with an ISIS cell in the eastern countryside of Deir Ez-Zor.
One ISIS militant was killed and another was wounded in the fighting, the group said, adding that five other militants were detained.
“Documents, equipment and a large weapons cache were seized,” it tweeted.
The U.S.-led Coalition forces also destroyed a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED), it said.
The militants planned to break out 5,000 detainees at a prison in Hasakah, according to the SDF.
The prison, a series of three converted school buildings that holds roughly 5,000 prisoners, are operated by the SDF, consisted of Kurdish and Arab fighters.
